An Aotearoa Wave and Tidal Energy Association (AWATEA) committee established by its executive to advance the development of a New Zealand Marine Energy Centre (NZMEC) has been progressing the issue with key stakeholders.
HERA industry development manager Nick Inskip, who is a member of the AWATEA executive and represents the interest of the local fabrication industry, is chairing the committee.
Extensive consideration has been given to potential wave and tidal test sites and cost and funding models are now being worked on.
The proposal being developed will include the twinning of NZMEC with the European Marine Energy Centre, located at Orkney in the UK.
New Zealand is seen as a potential gateway to the Pacific for device developers from Europe who are showing significant interest in the potential Marine Energy Centre.
A full proposal will be completed by the AWATEA, Business of Marine Energy conference in May.
Anyone interested in contributing to the process should contact HERA Industry Development Manager Nick Inskip on 09 262 4750.
