Hot wedge welding machines
used in Dubai
Dubai, on the Persian Gulf, is in the middle of a ‘mega-building-boom’, intending to entice 15 million tourists a year by 2015. This is three times as many as today.
In Dubai a sixth of all the cranes in use in the world are in use at the present time. In this small desert state they are also working diligently on an extremely ambitious site: The Lagoons.
The Lagoons is a system of artificial islands, lakes and channels that is connected to the Dubai Creek. In order to prevent the valuable water from trickling away in the desert sand, the entire installation is being lined with a HDPE liner, a task both complex and demanding with the extreme heat which is evident during the day. The contract for laying the liner was placed with the Dubai company BMC Gulf who have been contracted to seal off the approximately one million square metre area within a period of six months.
Speed Decides
There is no doubt that the compliance with such a request is dependent upon the equipment to be used. This is one of the reasons why BMC Gulf placed their trust in the Swiss technology provided by Leister when it came to the choice of the automatic
welding machines.
The hot wedge welding machines used not only braved the extreme outdoor temperatures, they also work more economically and constantly than all of their competitors. At a welding speed of up to 5 m/min, the ASTRO welds twice as fast as other products they looked at. This means that it is the fastest hot wedge welding machine in the world. On certain days the ASTROs produce an unbelievable daily output of 27.000 square metres.
Impressive Performance
In addition to the high welding capacity and the perfect quality of the welding seams, BMC Gulf was particularly impressed with the simple handling characteristics of the ASTRO. Digital readouts of temperature, speed and mains voltage allows all the relevant parameters to be checked in an optimum manner at any time. The infinitely variable welding pressure adjustment allows the pressure to be matched to the material. The sturdy construction allows up to 1.500 N (150 kg). Materials up to 3 mm thick can be joined with ease. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that BMC Gulf was more than happy with the performance of the Leister welding machines.
One-stop Shopping
In addition to the ASTRO hot wedge welding machines, BMC Gulf has been using Leister hand welding machines and hand extruders for a long time. They now have the advantage of being able to obtain all of the equipment for the welding of plastic liners from one supplier.
The innovative hand extruders Weldplast S4 and Fusion 3 are used for connecting the beds of the HD-PE tracks with those of the vertical shoreline boarding. They allow neat and economical welding of the connections with an output of up to 4 kg/h of extrudate.
